Daily Note

Didn't realize this until Jojo mentioned it on the last 800, but this is probably my last ever hard workout of my cross country career. Wasn't too difficult, wind picked up at the end though. Stiles kept switching what I was supposed to do today (to keep my legs fresh I guess since the last two weeks they evidently weren't) and I ended up with Jojo and Gadin's group. Reminded me of my countless other workouts with Jojo over the years.

Headed down to Detweiler with Alexandra to watch both my little sister and the HCXC guys race. Also got in some double mileage by running around cheering (with some guys I haven't seen in a while like Lacayo) and running a lap of the muddy course. Nostalgia brought a tear to the eye while watching the races. Lucy did okay (competing at State as a freshman is an accomplishment in itself) but holy shit the guys' race was something else. For most of the race it seemed like they were in good position except maybe their #5 (someone I don't think I've ever met named Max), but I couldn't believe what happened in the last ~3 minutes. Pulling away from the top pack was Bandukwala, neck and neck with some OPRF guy, and Watcke right behind them. And that Max guy somehow moved heaven and earth to catch like 50 people. I ran up to Snee who was swearing like crazy as the scores were updating and it seemed like HC had won by 2 points. And they went #1, #3 individually. But then Plainfield South, the only team even close in the scores, ended up winning by 1 point after everything updated. It was devastating to see those guys give it everything and come that close to first, especially after a second place finish last year. I think I've now told this story six or seven times now in just the last 24 hours.
