Daily Note

Done with finals! Had both the AM and PM session today, so it feels good to be done. Big impending weight off my shoulders. Was able to get started up with the day's effort @4pm when the weather was 24 degrees, 6mph winds, & cloudy. Had to do things solo, but honestly not too big of an issue since I was planning on working out. It had been a long while since I've done tempo, so decided that would be the way to go. Also it's definitely the most fun outdoor winter workout we have. Went out to NW roads for this which ended up being a real good choice. Not too many cars had me able to weave all over the road to avoid patches of ice. Only one small incident when I was around the three mile mark and passed Reuben going the other way. Casually told me there was a car right behind me...woof. Glad they were so patient. About a half mile saw Mike Finn returning from his minute repeat workout. I debated joining him, but decided I really wanted to get this week off to a productive start so continued down on Guam to reach the end, turn around, take a pee break, then start up my tempo at five miles. Was planning on 14 minutes, then almost immediately after beginning decided 15 would be better. By the end of things (should've expected this) I ended with three miles in 16:06. First mile felt very easy but actually came through quicker than I would've liked in 5:18. Reined things in with 5:26, but honestly this second mile felt the hardest. Probably due to the last half of it being uphill. Also started to notice here that my arms felt decently tired. Perhaps from yesterday's lift, but I've also had this 'problem' in many of my past tempos. Kinda weird. Felt much more smooth during my final mile and settled in nicely for a confident finish in 5:22. Very appropriate perceived effort all around and also happy since this was net uphill. Closed the day out with a slightly quicker cool down to Eveleth and back in using s*#% shack. Made the realization on my way out that maybe roads wasn't a great idea with the waning daylight, but thankfully I ended up having just enough! Would've liked a better sunset, but heavy cloud cover prevented that. Overdressed for this one. Felt very cold walking down so ended up being very sweaty at the end of this piece of work. Calf raises, toe tappers, rolling, 75 push-ups, 50 squats, 20 push-ups, & ankle mobility. Short time on the mats thanks to a fantastic dinner reservation at Chapati at 5:45 with the upperclassmen to send off Primo. Gonna really miss that guy second semester. Glad he'll be back for senior week so this doesn't feel like a final goodbye. Phil Kinvaras @ 105.07 miles.
