Daily Note

Terrible phlegm and moderate cough have stuck around today. Just gotta make sure I don't let this get to me mentally. Ate a bagged lunch at 12:35pm plus the PB&J and banana a tad later around 1:40. Seemed to work out pretty well. Started the warm-up @3:25pm. Was a bit delayed in changing into some proper WU stuff, so ended up meeting up with the big group of boys a half mile in. Pace felt like we were going quick, when in hindsight, it was perfectly normal, if not a little slow. Just summarizes how I felt on this thing. Crappy with no energy and coughing a lot. Had me frustrated and not looking forward to the race. Plus, some serious GI distress hit at the very end of things...oof. 2.7 miles in 20:20. Per usual, my phone died today right before I wanted to listen to some music pre-race. Also chose the wrong port-a-potty line but ended up having just enough time to fit everything necessary in, even if active was a tad limited. Something that's not the prettiest thing to note, but is probably important to mention, is my bad bowels the last 24 hours. Bad diarrhea, which thankfully didn't bother me in race. Did have to hit the bathrooms though pretty soon after, which is an anomaly...normally takes four or five hours. Don't know what's up, especially considering the iron stuff is supposed to constipate you. Anyways, onto the race, which went off at 4:15pm when the weather was lower 50s, cloudy, & moderate winds. Went off way too slow. Wanted to go around 5:20 but ended up with a 5:30...oof! Was going far too slow and felt very, very comfortable at this point. Almost immediately, picked the pace up and started moving quicker along the outside of a constant stream of boys. Having this many people in the race was a huge help towards me dropping the pace. Kept my eyes on Mike Finn and Luke Malek for almost the entirety of this thing. Second mile split was 10:47 followed by a 5:24 to get to a 16:11 split for the three mile. Had a very aggressive attitude after that first mile and the mental game was on point. Knew I was faster than most of the guys I was around and also knew I had to attack the hills if I wanted to move up in this race...gotta hit the hard parts hard if you want to truly improve. That being said, also tried to fly on the downhills and seemed to pass a decent amount of people on these portions of the course as well. At about this point in the race, it became the Andy Barnhart show. Raced with this guy the final four K and even shared a high five at the 5.5K mark. Good shit. Some mutual cheering the final K also helped. Additionally, passed my former high school teammate rocking his Playmakers jersey at the 5.8K and tried to give him some moral support. Same idea with Finn and Butch. For the first time ever did a pretty good job on the final uphill at Eau Claire and took off when I reached the top. Reeled in a lot of guys, but couldn't quite get Lonk. Great race on his part. All in all, not a confidence builder, but great to finally feel good in a race again. In all honesty, I felt a bit too good and should've been more aggressive. Official time of 26:26.3. 18 seconds slower than last year, but all things considered, decently happy with things. Smooth cruise and the cardio was surprisingly decent after about a K in. Legs also were rejuvenated after feeling like garbage yesterday and during the warm-up. CD was a slow jaunt around the course while watching the women's race. Forgot how nice it is to spectate without having a race to worry about. Lots of starting and stopping, but got some decent miles in around the course. Was planning to go a tad longer, but the legs were feeling pretty zonked by the end, so just listened to the body and stopped it there. Most of these 3.4 miles in 26:57 were with Crispy. Some stretching afterwards, but that was about it. All in all a great day for the team. Awesome to see eight guys sub-26 (and three freshmen?!). Just gotta make sure I'm up there with those boys at La Crosse, ready and rearing to fully compete. Confidence is gonna be key. Hopefully the times keep dropping from here on out.
